'Mistake' - Wenham baffled by 'Strange' Ange decision after recent Tottenham contract news

John Wenham still doesn’t understand why Tottenham ace Djed Spence was left out of the club’s UEFA Europa League squad.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose feels the right-back’s new contract with the club makes the decision to leave him out seem “increasingly strange.”

Spurs confirmed via their official website on Wednesday 16 October that Spence had signed a new deal in North London which runs until 2028, with the defender speculated to have received a pay rise.

Therefore, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – can’t understand why the 24-year-old isn’t featuring in Europe.

“It is unfortunate that Spence isn’t registered in the Europa League squad,” Wenham said.

“That was such a missed opportunity, especially with Guglielmo Vicario having played both matches in goal, having Fraser Forster in that squad seems like a mistake.

“Spence could have been playing all the minutes in the Europa League. With him having signed his new contract with the club, Postecoglou’s decision to leave him out seems increasingly strange.

“If he was featuring in the Europa League, that would’ve justified his new contract renewal.”

Spence would’ve been the perfect player to utilise in the Europa League. Therefore, Postecoglou left plenty of people baffled when he didn’t include the Englishman in his European squad.

Some might have perhaps thought that this meant Spence wasn’t a part of the club’s long-term thinking, despite his rise in prominence during pre-season.

However, now that he has signed a new deal with Spurs, that theory has gone out the window. Therefore, Postecoglou once again has questions to answer.

Those answers won’t change anything for Spence though, who will once again have to watch on as AZ Alkmaar visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Europa League on Thursday (24 October).
