'Money's not there' - Michael Stewart doubts Rangers have financial clout for transfer upgrade

Philippe Clement will need to get “imaginative” if he wants to upgrade Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers as the club lack the financial muscle to sign a better alternative.

That was the opinion of Michael Stewart when speaking on BBC Sportscene on Saturday (3 August) in a conversation about whether supporters will be surprised to still see the often-maligned Dessers leading the line.

The 29-year-old scored 22 goals in all competitions last season but was criticised for a lack of a clinical edge and drew a blank as Rangers started their Scottish Premiership campaign with a goalless draw at Hearts.

Stewart said of Rangers and improving on Dessers in the transfer market: “It’s a good question, are Rangers fans surprised? I would say probably not because I think there’s a realisation that money’s not there to go and find somebody else.

“For Philippe Clement he’s going to have to be imaginative in the transfer market and they’ve got no margin for error, if they bring somebody else in they really have to hit the ground running straight away.”

Can Rangers afford a Cyriel Dessers upgrade?

Very few people would doubt that Dessers’ heart is in the right place. He works extremely hard and he does have a lot of valuable traits that make him a useful player.

Unfortunately, being clinical is not one of those traits and the issue is when you play for Rangers you have absolutely no margin for error. The pressure to succeed is always so high and the margins so fine.

Reports have suggested that the Gers still want to sign Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland this summer but as yet there has been no hit that progress has been made on that front.

It is common knowledge too, thanks to Clement, that Rangers needed to sell to sign more players and even though the likes of Sam Lammers and Connor Goldson have departed you do sense the club would like a few more off the books.

So, it is a delicate situation. An upgrade would obviously be preferable but Rangers have to make sure anybody they do sign can produce the goods and fast.
