Morocco to host WAFCON 2024 in July 2025 as Nigeria aim to wrestle crown from South Africa

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed the 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to July 2025, Soccernet.ng reports

Originally set for this summer, the tournament will now take place in Morocco from July 5 to July 26, 2025.

CAF’s decision came during its executive committee meeting on Friday.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed confidence in the success of the upcoming tournament. He also highlighted the significant growth of women’s football in Africa.

“This will be the best AFCON in the history of this competition,” Dr. Motsepe said.

He also thanked King Mohamed VI of Morocco, the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF), and the Moroccan people for their support.

This is the first time WAFCON will be held outside its originally scheduled year.

Twelve teams have already qualified for the biennial competition, including Nigeria’s Super Falcons and the defending champions, South Africa’s Banyana Banyana.

Nigeria, the most successful team in the tournament’s history with eleven titles, last won the title in 2018 by defeating South Africa in the final. However, South Africa claimed their first title in 2022, beating Nigeria along the way.

Nigeria, the only African team to qualify for every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, will aim to reclaim their crown when the WAFCON kicks off in July 2025.
