Philippe Clement remains under intense pressure at Rangers due to the regular nature of the job at Ibrox, according to Paul McGinn.
Motherwell captain McGinn, whose side face Clement’s Gers on 29 December, has explained that if the team do not take maximum points from the next three games including against his own club, the heat will be back on the Belgian who has earned some respite over the past month.
Having suffered Scottish League Cup final heartbreak last Sunday [15 December], Clement’s side take on Dundee this weekend, followed by St Mirren and Motherwell before an Old Firm return against Celtic at Ibrox to open 2025 [2 January].
“I thought [Rangers] would give Tottenham a game in Europe but I didn’t expect them to be the better team,” McGinn recalled on the Go Radio Football Show [19 December, 09:53].
“But it’s not just Dundee, if they don’t take full points from every match before the Old Firm then the pressure comes right back.
“That’s the job [Clement] has got and that’s how it will always be.”
Rangers under pressure to secure maximum points
Everyone of a Rangers persuasion will be viewing the next three games as a block – not only as it rounds off the calendar year, but of course the aim to take maximum points.
The Old Firm brings a tense start to the New Year and could prove a turning point if Gers can secure a result over Brendan Rodgers’ side for the first time in eight meetings.
In the Light Blues’ current vein of form, a 100 percent return from the upcoming three games is perfectly possible, despite the tests that will be offered by the likes of McGinn’s Motherwell.
It’s crucial as well. The title may be out of reach for another year, but Clement’s side need to save face and at the very least finish second in the Premiership, which they are now on course to achieve with a game in hand on Aberdeen two points above.
The Tottenham and Celtic games last week may not have reaped a victory between them but have at least given Clement and his squad enough food for thought that they can compete with the best opponents they face. They now know the next step.
In other Rangers news, Nils Koppen could pull off a daring transfer move involving a Gers forward.
