Jeff Stelling believes Rangers are set for a “tough season” following a 0-0 draw against Hearts on Saturday (3 August).

Philippe Clement’s side were held to a stalemate by the Jam Tarts at Tynecastle in the opening match of the Scottish Premiership season, though there were plenty of talking points.

Hearts had a potential penalty claim waved away by referee Willie Collum, and Stelling believes that Steven Naismith’s men probably should have secured all three points against the Gers.

Speaking live via talkSPORT (5 August, 6:57am), Stelling said: “Hearts got a little tired towards the end but I thought they were the better side. They could, maybe should have, had a penalty.

“I looked at Rangers and thought, ‘My goodness, this is going to be a tough season’.”

Rangers draw against Hearts a cause for concern?

While it is only the opening game of the Scottish Premiership campaign, a draw against one of their league rivals will not be the most ideal of starts.

Many have already suggested that the Belgian is under heavy pressure at Ibrox, despite only becoming manager in October, especially with how the 2023/24 season ended.

Clement brought a lot of hope with him into the club, lifting the League Cup early in his tenure, but those same sparks started to dwindle as Celtic pushed past them in the league table and won the Scottish Cup.

If the new manager is to keep his job at Ibrox, he must do something that Rangers have rarely managed in Scotland over the past few seasons – beat the Hoops.

The draw against Hearts certainly could have swung either way, especially with free-scoring Lawrence Shankland on the pitch, but Clement will just be glad to be leaving Tynecastle without a defeat.

In other Rangers news, Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton clashed over a new Lawrence Shankland to Ibrox verdict.
