'My Sources Tell Me..' - Stefan Borson reveals what Man United really paid Newcastle for Dan Ashworth

Manchester United could have paid Newcastle United just £3million as part of the compensation package for Dan Ashworth.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider a source has revealed the fee was “well below” the £10million figure that has been suggested by some media outlets since the agreement was reached.

Newcastle placed the 53-year-old on gardening leave in February after he agreed a deal to join Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s new regime at Old Trafford.

The two Premier League clubs had previously been unable to agree a fee for Ashworth, with the north-east giants demanding up to £20million for his services.

But with Eddie Howe’s side believed to be on the verge of a profit and sustainability (PSR) breach, an agreement was struck before the 30 June accounting deadline allowing him to start work as Man United’s new sporting director this month.

Man United landed Dan Ashworth deal due to Newcastle PSR issues

Borson admitted Newcastle were not in a strong negotiating position towards the end of June and expects Old Trafford chiefs to have secured a good deal for Ashworth.

He told Football Insider: “There is quite a lot of rumour and counter rumour about how much Newcastle settled for in the end on Ashworth.

“I did hear one source say to me the fee was as low £3million.

“I’ve heard that it was well below £10million and nowhere near some of the numbers that have been rumoured.

“At the end of the day, Newcastle were over a barrel as they admitted last week.

“The CEO Darren Eales admitted that it was very close at the last minute in terms of PSR.

“I don’t think they were in a very good negotiating position at the death, so I suspect United did a decent deal.”
