Roger Hannah brought up Celtic star Callum McGregor to question Philippe Clement’s decision to hook Connor Barron as Rangers beat Hearts on Sunday.
Clement’s decision to replace Barron with Dujon Sterling in the 66th minute has not gone down well among many fans although the Gers went on to win 1-0 against Neil Critchley’s side at Ibrox on 10 November.
Speaking after the game, the Belgian defended his decision, saying he did so to protect the midfielder from injuries after playing the full 90 minutes against Motherwell and Olympiacos in the Light Blues’ previous games [Rangers Review].
Hannah reckons Barron would have been able to complete the game against Hearts without any trouble and pointed out how McGregor, who is nine years older, did the same for Celtic.
“I might be naive and old-fashioned, Callum McGregor at 31 played 90 minutes of a cup semi-final, 90 minutes of a Champions League game and 90 minutes on the plastic pitch at Kilmarnock, scoring a goal, didn’t look especially tired when he came off yesterday”, Hannah said on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Monday, 11 November.
“I don’t see how Connor Barron [can’t do that]. Listen, no slight on Connor Barron, he’s playing very well.
“I think Connor Barron would have wanted to have played 90 minutes of a cup semi-final, 90 minutes in the Europa League and 90 minutes at Ibrox.”

Rangers may have won their game against Hearts, but their performance left much to be desired and it is no surprise that many fans were not happy to see Barron hooked with 24 minutes left on the clock.

Home fans responded to Barron being substituted with boos and Clement did not make life easier for him by saying he did not understand why that was the case.
Barron’s performances in recent weeks have seen him earn a call-up to the Scotland national team and he will be hopeful of making his debut for the Tartan Army over the November international break.
Scotland face Croatia and Poland in the UEFA Nations League on 15 and 18 November and Clement will hope the midfielder returns from international duty unscathed.
In other Rangers news, an Ange Postecoglou-esque manager has been mooted amid Clement’s struggles this season.
