Neil Lennon believes the VAR officials could be punished after their errors in Rangers defeat to Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup final.
The SFA head of refereeing, Willie Collum, admitted that the officials made an error in not awarding a penalty in extra time after Liam Scales’ foul on Vaclav Cerny at Hampden Park on 15 December.
Lennon admits they had “no excuse” to get the decision wrong, which may have affected the end result as the Light Blues ended up losing in a penalty shootout.
Speaking on PLZ Soccer [19 December], the former Hoops manager said: “Unfortunately, for the people who made that decision, there’s going to be a suspension or a punishment.
“But that’s the rules. You’ve got to get these decisions right. There’s so much riding on it for everyone involved. It would have had a bearing on the game. It’s a huge decision that’s gone against them. For me, there’s no excuse now to get these decisions wrong.”
Rangers controversy as suspensions on cards
No admission or statement from the SFA will change the fact that the Bears lost to their Old Firm rivals.
Under Philippe Clement, the Light Blues have failed to win any of their six matches against Celtic, a remarkable statistic that needs to change at Ibrox.
Brendan Rodgers’ team are 11 points ahead of the Gers in the Scottish Premiership and it’s unlikely that other teams in the league will be able to catch up to them.
Rangers have their pride at stake, though, and at home on 2 January, the Belgian manager must ensure that he finally breaks his duck in the Old Firm derby.
The Light Blues still have a lot to play for this season, and their chances of qualifying for the Europa League’s knockout stages are high.
With the Scottish Cup also on the horizon, the Bears have something else to look forward to as well.
The Ibrox faithful will hope Clement can build on the recent displays and finish the campaign on a high note.
