Dominic Calvert-Lewin could join Juventus on a free transfer after leaving Everton in the summer, according to Corriere dello Sport.
The Italian outlet’s website report that Thiago Motta is only able to rely on Dusan Vlahovic up front currently and the Old Lady is looking to add Lille’s Jonathan David when his contract expires.
But with the Serbian’s contract situation still to be resolved and more cash to be paid after a heavy summer of recruitment sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli is considering other affordable options at striker.
Calvert-Lewin has now emerged as a possibility for the Serie A giants, with his contract running down and reported designs on getting back into the England team.
Dan Friedkin takeover may be key to Everton stay
Calvert-Lewin’s contract situation is likely to be one of The Friedkin Group’s top priorities when their expected takeover from Farhad Moshiri is completed.
The Roma chiefs’ arrival is slated to spark activity in the transfer market and in terms of internal negotiations [i News, 9 October], and since the striker’s reasoning for not signing a new deal previously has been put down to ownership uncertainty [The Times, 19 July] it may be the catalyst for him to extend his stay.
There was widespread interest in England during the summer with the likes of Manchester United and West Ham looking at the 27-year-old [Liverpool Echo, 14 August].
But talks with Newcastle over a potential swap with Yakuba Minteh collapsed and options for him to be included in talks between Everton and Chelsea didn’t suit both clubs [GiveMeSport, 2 September] before Armando Broja arrived on loan before the deadline.
There was also interest in Serie A from AC Milan [Daily Mail, 23 June], while Juventus have also been credited with interest in Calvert-Lewin’s back up Beto [Gazzetta dello Sport, 13 October].
The Portuguese arrived from Udinese ahead of last season but, despite some positive signs, has yet to establish himself.
Absent a sudden break out from him, or Broja establishing himself as a long-term alternative once he returns from the injury he arrived with, it would leave Everton short going forward to lose Calvert-Lewin.
His fitness issues in recent seasons have no-doubt contributed to interested clubs being unwilling to spend a sizeable fee on him, but it would certainly cost plenty for the Toffees to replace his influence.
If Juventus are sniffing around they can open talks with him over a pre-contract in January so it might be a race against time for Friedkin if he can get his takeover completed in the next couple of months.
In other Everton news, the Toffees may have committed a “massive self own” that hits them on PSR.
