Newcastle United fans have been taken aback by Gary Neville’s comments on the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Speaking following Liverpool’s 3-0 victory against Man United, the former full-back explained his view that the financial rules are no longer fit for purpose.

He went on to suggest that clubs in Newcastle’s situation should be allowed to spend with their owners’ investment to challenge the likes of Man City.

The Magpies were forced to sell both Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh earlier this summer in an attempt to balance the books – leading to frustration at the club.

Man United found themselves in their own PSR difficulties and sold academy graduate Scott McTominay in the closing stages of the window to help balance the books.

Now, Neville has hit out at the Premier League and called for the rules to be changed to benefit clubs, singling Newcastle out as an example.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Main Event (1 September), Neville ranted: “I think that was the most bizarre transfer window.

“I think PSR now is starting to be applied by the Premier League, and that’s why we’re seeing a lot of clubs, including Manchester United, having to navigate around selling players that maybe they wouldn’t want to.

“PSR was never designed so that clubs had to sell their best academy players. That’s what we’re seeing, so something needs to change dramatically in the next 12 months.

“Newcastle should be able to invest in their squad and PSR needs changing so that there is owner investment allowed and Newcastle can get to the level of Manchester City.

“We can’t just keep a thumb on club’s heads and say they’re not allowed to invest. We can’t keep Newcastle back, and we’re holding them back at this moment in time.“

With Neville now acting as a voice for the fans on this topic, supporters of all clubs have agreed with his points as calls for PSR to change have grown louder.

As the clip of Neville’s rant was shared via Sky Sports’ social media channels, fans of the Magpies responded positively to his calls, insisting he was “spot on”.
