Ferguson shares what should be on Rangers wishlist as three signings mooted before August 30

Barry Ferguson believes Rangers are three signings away from challenging Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

The Light Blues will hope to be active in the transfer market up until the 30 August deadline as Philippe Clement continues his summer overhaul of the squad.

Ferguson, writing for the Daily Record [23 August] has revealed what he would do to improve Rangers in the final seven days of the transfer window.

He said: “Clement and Koppen will be combing through their list of targets hoping they can get some new faces in late. If it were me making the big calls, I’d have three experienced campaigners right at the top of my wish list. I’d be looking for some streetwise characters who have been around the block and will be able to help guide the younger lads in the team through the difficult moments that are certain to come over the next nine months.”

Rangers should target experience this summer

Clement has worked under a sell-to-buy approach at the Gers this summer and has lost a lot of experience in the squad by doing so.

Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic, John Lundstram, and Kemar Roofe are the seasoned first-team stars to leave Glasgow this summer as their high wages were deemed a worthy sacrifice to be invested back into the side.

It appears out-of-favour wingers Scott Wright [Chris Jack] and Rabbi Matondo are next on the hit list list for the Light Blues.

Clement will be undergoing the daunting task of challenging Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title this season with a relatively inexperienced squad as Ferguson’s stance rings true however, the Light Blues have opted for a different approach in their recruitment.

Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron, Jefte, Hamza Igamane, and Mohammed Diomande are all summer signings under 23 years of age and have the potential to be sold for a healthy profit in the future if they perform in Scotland.

Almeria centre-back Kaiky is the latest target to fall within this bracket as the Gers saw a bid rejected for the Brazilian [Fabrizio Romano].

Given the financial situation at Rangers and the landscape of modern football, it is the most sensible approach for the club, but even accounting for that they have to find a way of making sure they challenge Celtic for supremacy in Scotland.

In other Rangers news, a billionaire-owned club is readying a loan for Matondo with the Gers to pay a large sum of the wages.
