Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Newcastle need to agree more Saudi sponsorship deals now or risk a points deduction for breaking spending rules.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Magpies’ commercial directors must do more to bring money in.
Newcastle were purchased by a Saudi-backed consortium in 2021 and have spent heavily on first-team players since the deal’s completion.
However, the Tyneside club came close to breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in the summer after years of big transfer spending.
Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson were moved on by the Magpies’ transfer team to avoid being hit with a points deduction.
Wyness warned that danger remains real ahead of the January transfer window, with Newcastle needing to go further to extract value from their Saudi ownership.
Newcastle risk points deduction for PSR overspend, says Wyness
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Newcastle are going to have to do something, and get some sponsorships in sooner rather than later.
“The facts are simple. They’ve spent about £400million since the Saudis have come in, it’s a lot of money.
“Until they get the earning side back up, they will be tight on PSR.
“Bruno Guimaraes, Tonali, Gordon – these are great players. But they’ve now got to get the revenue up.
“It’s got to be global sponsorship deals. Man United were very good at this – and Newcastle have got to milk the Middle East in a similar way.
“It’s on their commercial director to do that as soon as possible.”
