Newcastle told to accept £20m Longstaff offer - pundit

Newcastle United needs to sell Sean Longstaff to bring in a stronger option ahead of the new season as the club looks to climb up the Premier League table.

That is the belief of former Celtic and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie, who was speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the reports that Newcastle are open to selling the midfielder.

The Magpies are ready to accept offers for Longstaff this summer, having set a £20million fee for his services, should another club be interested.

Considering the 26-year-old is out of contract next summer, a sale in this window will represent a chance for Newcastle to make some profit on him rather than risk letting him leave for free this time next year.

However, the midfielder sees his long-term future at St James’ Park, creating contrasting narratives regarding what’s next for him.

Newcastle United need to cash in on Longstaff to improve the squad

The £20million valuation that the Magpies have put on the homegrown midfielder is something McAvennie agrees is great business, which could give the club a chance to reinvest.

“£20million’s a lot of money, and they could bring in somebody,” McAvennie told Football Insider.

“Longstaff’s alright, but he’s not a top player is he, at the moment? I think Newcastle are setting their sights higher and whatever why they’ve got to do to get there they’ve got to do it.

“The only thing I’ll say is, fans love homegrown players; they absolutely adore them, and it depends who they bring in to soften it, that’s the crunch.

“But the guy’s got aspirations to go and play football; he’s obviously been told he’s not going to get that, or the club has to sell to bring someone else in.

“He’ll be kept up to date; I can’t see Eddie Howe not mentioning why he’s leaving and all that. I think Eddie would’ve sat down with him and had a chat.”

In other news, Newcastle are willing to let a striker leave this summer.
