Newcastle United have been warned to pull the plug on a potential deal to sign Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus after a new twist.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected within the game, insisted that they need to look for a more prolific goalscorer to ease their concerns.
This comes amid speculation surrounding the future of Alexander Isak, while Eddie Howe is also keen to add to his options to lead the line due to a lack of depth.
Football Insider revealed on 28 October that Isak, 25, could push for a move away from St James’ Park amid concerns about the club’s ambitions.
Jesus has been touted as a potential replacement, but it has now been said they should focus on targeting an out-and-out number nine rather than a versatile forward.
The 27-year-old has scored just once in 14 appearances for Arsenal so far this season, while he has gone 18 Premier League games without a goal, in a run stretching back to January.
As a result, Newcastle have been told to drop their interest in the forward in favour of a more consistent goalscorer who can find the net on a regular basis.

Isak remains the first-choice forward in Howe’s team, but his injury issues and speculation over his future have forced the club to consider their options.
Robinson has now insisted that the reason Arsenal want to sign a new striker is because of their lack of firepower, and has urged Newcastle not to make the same mistake.
“He doesn’t score enough goals,” he told Football Insider.
“It’s as simple as that, he just doesn’t score goals.
“He can play wide and in different positions, but he’s a striker, that’s the issue Arsenal have had.
“Newcastle went into last season light with Isak and Wilson who are both susceptible to injuries.
“So they’re light in that area as it is, and if you’re going to sign a striker then you want one who can provide a consistent source of goals.
“Arsenal are constantly linked with signing a new number nine because they haven’t got an out-and-out goalscorer in that team.
“Kai Havertz has done really well, but with a striker who scores regularly, they’d get better results.
“From a Newcastle point of view, if they’re looking to replace Isak or just add to what they’ve got, they need to sign a striker who can score goals.
“If they’re looking to play him out wide and not through the middle, he doesn’t get in ahead of Joelinton.
“With two years on his contract at Arsenal, he’ll be more happy than the club will be.”
