Newcastle United's SJP explansion plan revealed - Sources

Newcastle United are planning to increase the capacity of St James’ Park in the summer of 2025, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke explained that discussions have already begun, although it will be a difficult process which could begin next summer.

Newcastle are looking to increase the club’s commercial revenue following their sponsorship deal with Adidas.

The club will also open a fan zone outside of the stadium to bring in further revenue and allow for bigger spending in the future.

An increased capacity means more ticket sales, more income, and ultimately more room to manoeuvre within the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Newcastle were among multiple clubs looking to avoid a possible breach of PSR last month and were forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to raise funds.

After Nottingham Forest and Everton were hit with points deductions for breaches last season, the Magpies were desperate to avoid a similar situation.

Those deals were part of several in England which saw financially threatened clubs selling and buying players from one another for high prices.

Clubs across the Premier League have been looking for ways around the financial issues, and Newcastle believe an increased stadium capacity will be of huge benefit.

The club have continued to explore ways of driving their income and revenue streams up to allow for increased spending under their Saudi Arabian owners.

Frustration had emerged during the early stages of the transfer window that the richest owners in the league were unable to spend as they pleased given the strict rules.
