Nils Koppen shares one of the 'key things' he still wants to change at Rangers

Nils Koppen has shared that selling players to “transition and reinvest” between different seasons is still one of the “key things” he wants to change at Rangers.

The Gers have a clear focus on signing young talent during the last window the likes of Jefte, Hamza Igamane and Clinton Nsiala arriving.

However, in terms outgoings the club struggled to raise significant funds through player sales and Koppen says the ultimate aim is to significantly improve the club’s player-trading model.

“I think that when the club won the league [in 2021] the thinking was, ‘We’re going to keep everybody and keep winning’,” he said to Rangers Review (15 October).

“But winning 55 with all the players in the best moments of their careers is the time to transition and reinvest in order to win again, even though keeping that side together should’ve returned more success. That’s one of the key things I want to change.

“You have to let the players go, also because that’s how you attract them, they come with an ambition to go. We cannot force them to stay”.

Rangers need to improve their transfer model

Rangers are still one of the strongest teams in Scotland but there’s no denying that their transfer model could be vastly improved.

After the club won title number 55, players such as James Tavernier should have been sold when they were at the peak of their powers and worth the most they had ever been.

If Rangers managed to sell the right-back in 2021, they wouldn’t be left trying to scrape whatever they can from his sale this season as his performances start to worsen [HITC, 6 September].

Many clubs were vying for the defender’s services over the summer with free agent Cyrus Christie even being mooted as a potential option to replace him [HITC, 7 September].

Koppen and Philippe Clement had a fairly stale transfer window this summer and while older players with large wages did depart, they did so on the cheap and it feels as if the quality they’ve been replaced with at the moment doesn’t quite match.

It’s clear that Koppen has the Gers’ best interests at heart but unless he can act upon his words, Clement’s men will just continue finding themselves in the shadow of their arch-rivals Celtic.
