'No confidence': Manchester United told Erik ten Hag is only showing faith in one summer signing

It’s the same old conversations going on about Manchester United and Erik ten Hag.

As of this moment, ten Hag stays on as Manchester United boss, but that shouldn’t be a surprise, even if their Premier League form states otherwise.

Yes, they are sitting 14th in the table and have only won two matches this term, including drawing both their Europa League games.

But the powers that be at Old Trafford backed the Dutchman in the summer and now they have to let him work with those new players.

It has been a common theme in the transfer market from Manchester United, they have allowed their manager to bring in players he has either worked with or he knows very well.

But, according to Michael Dawson, he has only shown faith in one of his new signings and that was proven during Manchester United’s drab goalless draw at Aston Villa on Sunday.

There was more chopping and changing from the manager at the back, Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire came into the side, with his new signing Matthijs de Ligt on the bench.

Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte hasn’t played the last two matches after a poor showing during the defeat to Tottenham the week before.

But one man who is starting constantly is fullback Noussair Mazraoui and Dawson feels he is the only one ten Hag is showing faith to, as he told The Football Show on Sky Sports (08/10/24 at 10:20 am).

The former centre-back was critical of ten Hag for going down this road and how it doesn’t help his players.

“As an ex-player when you get bought, the last thing you want is to be taken out of the XI for two players who have been at the football club in a long time in Evans, a 36-year-old, and Harry Maguire, who was supposedly surplus to requirements,” said Dawson.

“But yet, I am a big fan of both of them. They have come in and done a good job. De Ligt and Martinez must be thinking ‘wow’. Even Ugarte, I am thinking, you have just come in, this game from the outset looked like it was going to be perfect. I think he needs to play them and stick with his team, rather than chopping and changing.

“As a player, you need the confidence from your manager. All the players, apart from Mazraoui, he hasn’t shown any faith or confidence in them because he has chopped and changed. He has given them no real game time or momentum.”

Mourinho will feel that he was hard done by at Manchester United and you can bet your bottom dollar he is going to make sure everyone knows about it when he speaks to the media in the lead-up to the match.
