David Edgar has lashed out at striker Cyriel Dessers after Rangers’ comfortable 4-1 win against Nice on Thursday night.

The 29-year-old was dropped by Philippe Clement for just the fourth time in all competitions this term, with Hamza Igamane trusted up front in their Europa League tie on 28 November.

Clement’s trust in Igamane paid off, scoring twice in a great European night for the Gers, but Dessers was still catching stray criticism from frustrated fans after an indifferent cameo in France.

Replying to a fan’s comment about Dessers not being able to be the Gers No.9, Edgar wrote via X [28 November]: “No, he can’t. We aren’t winning titles with him and we can’t grow him into a valuable asset either.

“No upside. There potentially is with Igamane.”

Cyriel Dessers still centre of Rangers criticism after Nice victory

Dessers has been the pantomime villain since arriving at Ibrox in the summer of 2023, even with the striker continuing to hit the back of the net.

However, his 32 goals in 76 appearances is rarely the issue. His lack of ability on the ball and his impact at crucial moments is what riles up the fanbase and adds pressure on the club to find a new striker.

While Igamane has yet to really hit his stride since moving from FAR Rabat in the summer, he has shown some brilliant spurts of talent and ability. He’s just exciting to watch.

Dessers, on the other hand, seemingly can’t escape the criticism even when starting on the bench against Nice, but the fans have just become so frustrated with him.

Following his display in the Europa League, supporters will be pleading for Clement to start Igamane much more but the Belgian has continued to stick by his first-choice No.9 – will he stop now?
