Darren Bent claims Everton will be “absolutely seething” after Leicester City look to have avoided a Premier League points deduction.

The Foxes were previously charged for an alleged breach of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

However, as reported by BBC Sport (3 September), an independent panel has ruled that the Premier League could not punish Leicester as the club had been relegated to the Championship when their accounting year ended on 30 June 2023.

And Bent, speaking on talkSPORT (4 September), claims Everton will be frustrated by this decision.

Bent said, “If you’re Everton, and Nottingham Forest right now, you’re seething, aren’t you?

“Absolutely seething. You’re thinking, hold on a second here, we got punished, it nearly cost us last year, relegation with the points deductions.

“And Leicester have managed to find a way of kind of getting around that.”

Everton to be angry as Leicester City look set to avoid Premier League points deduction

It is understandable why supporters of Everton and Nottingham Forest will feel hard done by.

On the surface, it seems as though Leicester City have avoided punishment despite allegedly committing the same offence as both Forest and Everton, who were punished.

However, fans of both clubs need to consider the bigger picture in this situation. Leicester City were relegated from the Premier League, which is why they have avoided punishment.

It might seem like a technicality to some, but rules are rules, and despite this recent decision, the Foxes still received a much bigger blow than Everton and Forest.

They had to play a season in the Championship, which would have been a big financial hit. Therefore, that is much worse than being deducted points which didn’t lead to a relegation anyway.

As a result, it is important that fans quickly move on from this and make sure not to misdirect their anger at the Premier League for example, who will also be frustrated by the decision.
