Jamie O’Hara has slammed the recruitment made by Rangers over the summer transfer window, describing the team as “really average”.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [2 September], O’Hara claimed the Old Firm defeat to Celtic represented “men against boys” on Sunday and that teams in the club’s recent past under Steven Gerrard and Gio van Bronckhorst were far superior.

Philippe Clement’s men sit fourth in the Scottish Premiership having taken seven points from a possible 12.

O’Hara, on air with Jason Cundy, said: “I just think the recruitment hasn’t been good enough has it? I mean what I watched, it looked like men against boys, Celtic just quicker, sharper, moved the ball better, tactically better.

“When Gerrard was there I took a bit more notice – because he was there – and Rangers looked a good side.

“Van Bronckhorst comes in, good European run, they were decent, now I’m watching and I’m thinking these are really average.”

Rangers will assess transfer business soon

Whilst it has been ascertained both externally and inside the club that Rangers were by far second best at the weekend, the long-term strategy of these new signings will hopefully come to fruition as the season goes on.

Clement did not get every target he wanted, with the club restricted in their spending power until late in the window due to their inability to shift surplus players early enough.

A few months down the line, the recruitment team headed up by Nils Koppen will be able to better assess the success stories of the summer transfer window, and who is found wanting.

The Gers brought in 10 first-team signings, levelling out at around £15m; rivals Celtic spent roughly double the amount including an £11m record deal for Arne Engels, able to offer the Champions League incentive.

It all becomes ingredients to Brendan Rodgers boasting the superior squad – but there will at least be players at Clement’s disposal who adapt to the challenge and improve, and there simply must be.

In other Rangers news, a James Tavernier exit is still not out of the question.
