Rangers are missing a player like Celtic star Callum McGregor to marshal their midfield, according to Barry Ferguson.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (2 September), the ex-Gers captain singled out the Celtic skipper, who scored the third goal in the latest Old Firm on 1 September.

Ferguson highlighted McGregor’s ability to free up space for his teammates both in midfield and further forward, saying that the new-look Light Blues do not have a talisman of similar experience.

He said: “What Callum McGregor does is he allows players like (Reo) Hatate and (Paulo) Bernardo to go and express themselves.

“He stands in the middle of the pitch and manages them.

“That is what I think Rangers are really missing, an experienced head in there to manage younger players throughout the game.”

Rangers miss out on headline midfielder transfer

While several much-needed additions have been made to Philippe Clement’s squad at Ibrox over the summer, one area of the pitch in which they have arguably gotten weaker is in central midfield.

John Lundstram and Ryan Jack both left on free transfers and Jose Cifuentes made another loan move, but only new Scotland call-up Connor Barron has been brought in as a replacement.

Mohamed Diomande and Nedim Bajrami are both seen as options, but Diomande had already been on loan at the club last summer and deadline day signing Bajrami is more of a number 10.

Kenny McLean from Norwich had been mentioned and free agent John Fleck has been training with the club, but signing neither has left Clement short of a real number six.

This leaves Rangers without a player in the mould of McGregor, who dominated once again at Parkhead, and if they want to bridge the gap to Celtic any time soon, an experienced head must be top of the agenda.

In other Rangers news, Ally McCoist was reminded of a worrying factor behind past successes after the 3-0 loss to Celtic.
