Kris Boyd has continued his brutal assessment of the Rangers team following their Old Firm defeat by Celtic on Sunday.
The former Gers striker told Sky Sports [X, 3 September] that “four or five” of the Celtic bench from the weekend would walk into Philippe Clement’s starting XI.
Boyd had already made the comment live on Sky Sports [1 September] following the full-time whistle that no Rangers man would get “anywhere near” Brendan Rodgers’ team.
As the dust continues to settle, he said: “I would argue anybody who can put forward a case that a Rangers player gets in the Celtic team at the moment.
“When you look at the Celtic team, they look far superior all over the pitch.
“And if you want to rub salt in the wounds, you could easily look and say there are probably about four or five of the Celtic bench that would walk straight into [Clement’s] starting team.”
Rangers already playing catch-up
Amid the Ibrox and Hampden Park fiasco, CEO James Bisgrove leaving for Saudi Arabia and a host of experienced players being replaced largely by future project signings, the sluggish start to Rangers’ campaign has been pretty predictable.
Clement as the front-facing figure must take a lot of the brunt for factors that are out of his control, as the Belgian attempts to navigate a season in which he will argue he is far less resourced than his counterpart Brendan Rodgers on the green side of Glasgow.
The 6-0 win over Ross County aside – that will happen occasionally by virtue of the vastly inferior teams in Scotland – it has been a dismal start to the campaign, topped off by a Champions League qualifying exit which centred around a ridiculous refereeing decision.
Clement will be hoping newest recruits Nedim Bajrami and Neraysho Kasanwirjo can settle as quickly as possible, as they will be very important assets this term.
The squad is nowhere near as experienced as last year, but it will be a potentially productive learning curve – something which whilst all well and nice, is not what the Gers fans need in the short-term.
