'One Hell Of A Scandal' - Keith Wyness: Man City owners could intervene in 115 charges case

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted the Man City 115 charges hearing must be “as transparent as possible” to prevent influence from Abu Dhabi.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed it would be “one hell of a scandal” if reports of interference emerged.

Man City and the Premier League will fight behind closed doors this month in the much-anticipated hearing into 115 alleged breaches of financial rules.

Among other breaches, the English champions are accused of failing to provide accurate details for player and manager payments or comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

City are owned by Abu Dhabi United Group, a private equity fund run by United Arab Emirates vice-president and deputy prime minister Sheikh Mansour.

The UK government admitted to The Athletic last year (2023) that its embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) in London have discussed the charges levelled at Man City.

Wyness warns of potential government influence in Man City case

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’ve always been very cynical about this.

“I’ve thought that when it was time for Abu Dhabi to come and purchase some jets from the UK, they’ll give the government the order as long as they can sort out the football problem.

“It’s very hard for the Premier League to fight a nation-state.

“This has always been the fear, having the owners intervene like that.

“The hearing must be as transparent as possible. If we do find there has been undue influence, and these things always come out in the end, it will be one hell of a scandal.

“I hope it won’t be the case.”
