Shelley Kerr has praised Rangers manager Philippe Clement for coming out and stating that Todd Cantwell has handed in a transfer request.
Clement revealed on 25 July, unprompted, that Cantwell has asked to leave the club before the transfer window closes later this month.
The Gers boss has had an uneasy relationship with the playmaker, having previously hauled him off early in a game for tactical reasons.
However, Kerr has now raised the question as to exactly why Cantwell is looking to leave Ibrox.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, as per the Daily Record [2 August], BBC Sport pundit Kerr said: “It’ll be interesting what the narrative is and what the context is.
“Rangers as a club have highlighted that it’s a transfer request – which I like because they have been very open and honest about it.
“When Rangers first signed him he looked really promising and had a few really good performances, and then you look back and there was one of the games he got taken off and he wasn’t best pleased about it.
“At the time he recovered from it and added a little bit of value, but there is something that is actually going on in his head as to why he doesn’t want to be there.
“I always think it a player doesn’t want to be at Rangers or Celtic there is something going on in there. There is another narrative to this I think.”
Todd Cantwell surely on way out of Rangers
The game in question Kerr is referring to was against Aris Limassol in the Europa League last November, not too long after the Belgian had taken over.
Cantwell struggled to make any real impact under Clement and is now out of the picture, although the Gers boss has made it clear he would still welcome him back.
Reading between the lines, Rangers will look to land some sort of fee for Cantwell in the next few weeks, but otherwise he will stay at Ibrox and fight for a starting spot.
From Cantwell’s perspective, he feels it is time to head back south – presumably – after a rather hit-and-miss time of things in Glasgow.
After a superb start, he has since gone off the boil and can be an incredibly frustrating figure when it is not his day – which is all too often the case.
That is not to say Cantwell cannot return to his form of old should he indeed stay at Ibrox, but the honest truth is that it is best for both parties if he finds a new club.
In other Rangers news, a pundit has told the Gers they simply “cannot afford” a player they want to sign.
