Keith Jackson picks Rangers star over new Celtic signing

Keith Jackson would pick Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland over new Celtic signing Kasper Schmeichel ahead of the new season.

Celtic have just brought in the Premier League winner after Joe Hart announced his retirement, with Butland joined by Liam Kelly at Ibrox.

Speaking on the Daily Record Hotline (1 August) Jackson was quizzed on which goalkeeper he would take, with the England international coming out on top.

“I’ve got to say, Butland, in terms of he’s younger,” said Jackson.

“That would be the main factor, if you were asking me which I’d rather have in my 11 I’m having Butland on the basis that he’s younger and that would be the main factor.”

Jack Butland could be key to Rangers’ success this season

Last season was Butland’s first in the Scottish Premiership. Whilst not much was expected from him from either fans or the media, he turned out to be one of the best coups in recent memory.

After Philippe Clement’s side started off the window by recruiting a plethora of talent to bolster their ranks, the Belgian manager bled his transfer kitty dry.

This resulted in the club needing sales to fund the arrival of those needed to improve the team’s overall quality.

Sam Lammers’ sale is the perfect example of this because as soon as he exited Ibrox, the Gers moved for Robin Propper who has likely been brought in as Connor Goldson’s replacement.

But, despite him saying that all of his players have a price, Clement was adamant that he’d be keeping Butland between his sticks unless a bid worth £20million-plus came in [Derek Clark, 15 July].

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland
Jack Butland seems to have found himself a home at Rangers.

The Englishman was linked with a departure near the start of the transfer window but a move never came to fruition.

After spending the last few seasons of his career not cementing a first-team spot within a squad, it now feels as if the former Stoke City man has found himself a home in Glasgow.
