Ally McCoist has slammed Rangers’ pre-season results while admitting he’s been impressed by what he’s seen from Old Firm rivals Celtic.

After winning their opening pre-season friendly against Hamilton Academical on 6 July, the Gers have drawn with Standard Liege and Union Berlin and lost to Ajax, Manchester United and Birmingham City.

McCoist isn’t too pleased with Philippe Clement’s side, however he admits that his former club has gone through a lot of change this summer with Robin Propper becoming the ninth signing of the transfer window on Thursday (1 August).

Speaking on talkSPORT on Friday (2 August), as transcribed by the Daily Record, McCoist said: “The big two have had contrasting pre-seasons, shall we say. Celtic frankly have had some unbelievable results in pre-season.

“Rangers have frankly been pretty poor, although it was a good game against Union Berlin. Defensively they were all over the place but looked very good in attack.

“It’s a very difficult one, it’s a bit of a mixed bag at Rangers. There has been a few ones going out the door and he has brought a few in – the big centre-back from FC Twente Propper, Liam Kelly, Jefte, Connor Barron, and Mohamed Diomande has signed a permanent deal and the boy Cerny has signed as well.

“There is about six or seven new faces that have come in, but a bit of experience going out of the door as well. So, it’s difficult to predict but I would be hopeful that the performances will be better than what we have seen in pre-season.”

Rangers have it all to do to beat Celtic in Scottish Premiership title race

Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen deserve a lot of credit for their work since the end of last season because they’ve actually followed through on wanting a rebuild at Ibrox.

We’ve heard the word “rebuild” a lot over the last few years but no one has actually gone ahead and done it – not to any degree of quality, at least.

But Clement and Koppen have said goodbye to the likes of Connor Goldson, Ryan Jack, Kemar Roofe, John Lundstram and Borna Barisic who were all long-serving players in Govan.

Rangers
James Tavernier is the all-time leading defensive goalscorer for Rangers.

There are also links to suggest that they won’t be the only senior players leaving with James Tavernier, Ianis Hagi, Todd Cantwell and Scott Wright [Chris Jack] also potentially leaving, which would leave John Souttar as the longest-serving player at Rangers if they do go.

Nine new signings have been brought in with 30-year-old Dutch defender Propper being the most recent arrival from FC Twente to potentially replace Goldson.

It remains to be seen how the newbies get on but when you look at the squad now, you can at least say it looks fresh and isn’t full of players who’ve constantly let fans down against Celtic.

In other Rangers news, a pundit has told the Gers they simply “cannot afford” a player they want to sign.
