Aston Villa will be forced to sell players if they can’t bring their losses down to the £105million limit as they look to generate more revenue from several different areas.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Villa owners have “spent a fortune” over the past few years after helping the club secure a place in the Champions League for this season.
The Villa Supporters Trust has branded the club “out of touch” for charging up to £97 a ticket for their upcoming home Champions League matches.
The West Midlands giants also increased season ticket prices by 5 per cent this term and ripped out 900 season ticket seats to make way for new hospitality areas.
After the Champions League clash against Bayern Munich on 2 October sold out this week, Villa’s president of business operations Chris Heck admitted achieving the club’s ambitions while complying with the financial regulations has required difficult decisions to be made.
He added that the financial fair play (FFP) rules prohibit owners from covering shortfalls to finance their ambition, meaning the club must generate as much money as possible from sponsorships, merchandise and ticket sales to continue their progress.
Aston Villa need to generate revenue to avoid PSR breach
Borson revealed Villa will try and squeeze the gap from where they currently are towards the £105million losses limit Premier League clubs are allowed to make over a rolling three-year period.
“They have spent a fortune,” Borson told Football Insider.
“The Villa owners have spent a lot of money over the last few years and they have been successful in doing it.
“They got themselves into the Champions League.
“But we know that the club was very close to breaching PSR on the 30 June, so it’s not a surprise that they need to generate as much revenue as they can from wherever they can, be that ticket sales, Champions League, merchandising, everything.
“They are going to try and maximise every revenue line to try and squeeze the gap between where they are and the £105million limit.
“If they don’t do that, then they will have to sell footballers, which they might not want to do.”
