Derek McInnes has provided an “overwhelming body of evidence” that he is the man to spark a recovery at Rangers, according to Keith Jackson.
The Daily Record journalist wrote for the paper’s website on 11 November that the Kilmarnock boss is on what amounts to the “longest job audition in history” to replace Philippe Clement.
The Belgian’s position at Ibrox is “rapidly becoming untenable”, according to Jackson, with the Light Blues nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen at the top of the table, and after McInnes’ side gave Brendan Rodgers a scare in the 2-0 Hoops win at Rugby Park on 10 November he has proven he is the man to right things at Rangers.
Jackson wrote: “What Rangers need is to arm themselves with a manager who is capable of giving Rodgers a legitimate cause for concern.
“The overwhelming body of evidence shows that man is McInnes and the sooner Rangers get around to recognising it the quicker they might begin to recover from the catastrophe of Clement’s 12 months in charge.”
Kilmarnock boss destined for Rangers role?
If the Gers hierarchy, whether that be interim chairman John Gilligan, or the board that remains above him, haven’t already made a change at manager by now it is fair to wonder how far they are willing to stretch it.
Defeat to McInnes’ Kilmarnock side on 20 October sparked the latest round of speculation around Clement’s job, which was only heightened when he followed it up with another loss away to Aberdeen 10 days later.
There was a glimmer of hope in the badly-needed response he got out of his players at half time when trailing 1-0 to Motherwell in the League Cup semi final on 3 November, before a decent 1-1 away draw with Olympiacos in midweek.
But the miserable 1-0 home win over struggling Hearts on 10 November suggests the domestic struggles are going to persist, so if yet another change at manager is going to be made then McInnes arguably has the credentials.
Another former Gers player in Kevin Muscat has also been linked, just won a third title in a third different league after his Chinese championship with Shanghai Port, and has been backed for success with a European side by fellow Australian and former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou [ESPN, 9 November].
But whether it is because Gilligan is already stretched thin attempting to find a new Gers CEO and a replacement for himself as chairman, or because the club have already decided to weather the storm under Clement there has been little indication from inside Ibrox that a switch is imminent so far.
In other Rangers news, a finance expert has issued a “huge” verdict on major new investment at Ibrox.
