Patrick Stewart is backing Philippe Clement to turn things around at Rangers as he admitted he is pleased with their recent progress.
The Scottish Premiership side have had a poor start to the season following Clement’s appointment as manager in the summer.
The Gers sit third in the league table, 11 points off their rivals Celtic who are in the top spot showing how far the club have fallen.
As a result, there have been plenty of conversations surrounding the manager’s future at Ibrox even now the club have started to turn their results around.
After officially starting in his role on Monday [16 December], Stewart has suggested that the Belgian will be given the time to progress his side as he told the Daily Mail: “There has been a lot for us to be cautiously optimistic about in recent weeks.
“I know the signings we made in the summer are starting to really bed in and play with a degree of confidence.
“In fairness to Philippe, he always said it would take time. You always say ‘When will that time come?’ and we have seen that in the last few weeks.
“The match with Spurs really showed Rangers going head-to-head with a top Premier League side and it was a match we all felt we should have won.
“The performances in the SPFL have been really positive. We are scoring, not conceding.
“Of course, the cup final – I don’t want to dwell on it again, but it could have been such a memorable day. We have a lot to be positive about.”
Can Philippe Clement deliver success at Rangers?
After a very slow start to the season for Rangers, it certainly seems as though things have started to change recently. Before Sunday’s cup final loss on penalties against Celtic, the Gers were unbeaten in nine games in all competitions which shows a change in form.
Furthermore, Clement’s side is looking more settled with Hamza Igamane, who joined the club in the summer, standing out as a player who has really developed and added to his side’s performances.
However, when you look at the table and how far Rangers are off their arch -rivals, it’s a sobering reminder of how much work there is still to be done at Ibrox for the club to really feel like they are back to where they should be.
You can understand why Stewart is keen to give the boss more time and maybe he will show the ability to turn it around, but his positive comments may suggests he needs a reminder about the expectations at a club like Rangers.
In other Rangers news, Alan Hutton has offered his verdict on James Tavernier’s situation at the Ibrox.
