Troy Deeney says Manchester United player has been 'the biggest disappointment this year'

Manchester United have endured a very mixed year, though new manager Ruben Amorim seems to be steering the Red Devils in the right direction.

The Red Devils finished a lowly eighth in the Premier League last season, though they won the FA Cup and qualified for the Europa League as a result.

Manchester United have continued to struggle in the league this term, culminating in Erik ten Hag’s sacking.

Though Amorim has got some good results, including victory in the latest Manchester derby, they remain 13th in the table.

Troy Deeney has now spoken to talkSPORT about a Man United player he believes has been the “biggest disappointment this year”.

Troy Deeney deems Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford the ‘biggest disappointment this year’

Deeney was speaking about Marcus Rashford, who has found the back of the net just eight times in the Premier League this calendar year.

The 27-year-old scored 30 goals for Man United in the 2022/23 campaign, but has not been able to build on that impressive tally.

Rashford was omitted from the Red Devils matchday squad to contest the Manchester derby, along with Alejandro Garnacho.

Speaking to talkSPORT.com, Deeney was asked who his biggest flop of the year has been.

He replied: “Who’s been a flop for me? It sounds like I’m piling on and I don’t mean to, but you probably have to say Marcus.

“Marcus has probably been the biggest disappointment this year.

“Flop’s a hard word, but I mean disappointment in terms of expectation and what we think he can deliver.

“We probably have to say Marcus over the course of January until now.”

Why Deeney described Rashford as a ‘baby’

Deeney then explained what he meant by when he described Rashford as a ‘baby’ after he came on off the bench in Man United’s 2-0 defeat at Arsenal earlier this month.

He said: “What I’m on about with ‘baby’ is the attitude, he didn’t start against Arsenal, so he thinks he should start.

“So to prove to people that you should start, he’s just going to walk around, how does that logic work?

“That’s what a baby does, that’s what my kids do when they don’t get what they want, they sulk and scream and cry.

“And he decided he was going to walk around and try and hit 70-yard diags [diagonal passes] off the pitch, but that’s the manager’s fault I suppose?

“I just think he’s highly talented, had all of the opportunity in the world and at some point it’s got to be his fault, and not somebody else’s, that’s what I think.”

Man United and Rashford stance ahead of January transfer window

On Tuesday, Rashford said he was “ready for a new challenge” away from Old Trafford in an interview with journalist Henry Winter.

“When I leave it’s going to be ‘no hard feelings’. If I know that a situation is already bad I’m not going to make it worse,” he said.

“I’ve seen how other players have left in the past and I don’t want to be that person. When I leave I’ll make a statement and it will be from me.”

TBR Football transfer expert Graeme Bailey has revealed that Rashford is not keen on a move to the Saudi Pro League, who are showing an interest in the England international.

It has been reported that the Red Devils would not sell Rashford for less than £70million.
