Peter Martin shares Clement sack verdict at Rangers as £60m point raised

Peter Martin has suggested Rangers need to gamble on the future of Philippe Clement if they are to secure the £60million fee for Champions League qualification.

The Gers manager has come under pressure from supporters after the 1-0 defeat against Kilmarnock on Sunday (20 October).

Clement wants fans to be patient, but with the Light Blues sitting third in the Premiership, Martin told The Football Show on PLZ Soccer [23 October] that the hierarchy need to gamble or risk missing out on a much-needed financial boost.

He said: “The thing that I keep emphasising that I think is so critical, it’s a £60m throw of the dice. You’ve got to at least be second to try and get qualifiers for the Champions League, that’s why it’s so critical.

“There are a group of Rangers fans who are smart, who look at a game and they aren’t fooled by managers’ lines – they’ve seen it all before.

“They’ve paid good money consistently and they want to changes at boardroom level. They want to see investment because the biggest investors consistently are the fans.”

The situation at Ibrox is far from ideal, whether that be on the pitch or off it with plenty for fans to dig their teeth into.

John Bennett came under fire before departing and now John Gilligan is taking his time to make the right additions to the boardroom.

Although this is a positive thing from the interim chairman, the Gers don’t really have time to waste given how poorly the season has started.

The Light Blues were dumped out of the Champions League at the qualifying stage this season by Dynamo Kyiv and have won one and lost one in the Europa League since dropping down.

Despite some positive performances, including one against Malmo in Europe, there have been few silver linings to speak of this campaign.

This has seen Clement become a target of discontent from supporters, who are growing tired of the Belgian’s promises at Ibrox.

Once a new chairman comes in, there is every chance that whoever it is looks to make a change in the dugout, but fans could be forced to wait until later in the campaign if it does happen.
