Philippe Clement is glad there has been transparency after Rangers were wrongly not awarded a penalty against Celtic in the League Cup final.
There has been controversy since the game after the Scottish Football Association’s head of refereeing Willie Collum admitted that Clement’s side should have been rewarded a penalty after Vaclav Cerny was fouled on the 18-yard line.
VAR failed to recommend a review at the time meaning the Gers missed out on an opportunity they felt might have changed the game for them rather than the match going to penalties where they lost 5-4.
Clement did not hold back in his analysis of the officials but admitted he was glad the SFA admitted the mistake as he said in his pre-match press conference: “My team played well [against Celtic], they were strong after a strong performance also against Tottenham.
“Players, staff, fans, everyone was hurt after the match.
“You feel after the game the rules of the game are not followed, there was no grey area which was clear after this game.
“It is good there has been transparency, and being open about what happened.”
Philippe Clement and Rangers have to move on
Although everyone at Ibrox is well within their rights to be incredibly frustrated with the officials after the admission that they should have been awarded a penalty, it is time to move and focus on the upcoming game against Dundee on Saturday [21 December].
There are no guarantees that the penalty would have been scored and whether that would have changed the game at all and there have been suggestions that Jefte should have received a red card during the game showing it can be a case of swings and roundabouts.
There is still plenty of work to be done by the Belgian to convince supporters that he is the man that can oversee change at the club as the Gers sit third in the league, 11 points away from their rivals at the top of the table.
However, before the cup final, Clement’s side were in a decent run of form having not lost in nine games across all competitions. Therefore, they need to put their focus into the league and ensure that they start gaining points to take them to second place.
In other Rangers news, one player’s injury means the Gers are prioritising one position in the January window opens.
