Alan Shearer couldn’t believe James Tarkowski escaped a controversial penalty decision for Everton in the 2-1 win against Crystal Palace.
The Blues fought back from one goal down with a brace from Dwight McNeil to secure their first Premier League win of the season at Goodison Park on Saturday [28 September].
However, Shearer, when discussing the match on The Rest is Football [30 September, 42:27] believes the Toffees were lucky not to be two goals down heading into half-time after Tarkowski challenged Jean-Philippe Mateta on the edge of the penalty area.
He said: “I thought it was a terrible decision. Palace should have had another penalty – that might have made it 2-0 if that had been given a penalty.
“I thought it was a terrible challenge but they got away with it.”
James Tarkowksi lucky not to cost Everton v Crystal Palace
For every Premier League side, there are moments throughout a season to be identified as turning points. Everton will surely look back at this decision as the moment their luck finally turned in their favour.
Tarkowski maybe should have been penalised for his foul on Mateta, footage shows the player himself also thought the same but the Blues still had a one-goal deficit to overturn and the incident should not overshadow their achievement.
Sean Dyche will be the most relieved man on Merseyside this week, his side have four points on the board after six matches and have climbed from the foot out of the table, out of the relegation zone.
Unlike in previous years, Everton have quality depth at centre-back, should Tarkowski be punished for his near-costly mistake, Jake O’Brien is waiting in the wings to replace the 31-year-old.
The Blues’ performances have been excellent despite the results, but this result feels monumental for the club and the turning point for Dyche who has been under fire since the opening day.
Jarrad Branthwaite has been dearly missed and he reminded Evertonians how defensively solid the side becomes when he’s on the pitch and with Nathan Patterson and Seamus Coleman nearing their return, Everton can re-establish their reputation as one of the best defences in the Premier League.
In other Everton news, Sean Dyche and Jesper Lindstrom’s talks emerge after his half-time axe for Blues v Crystal Palace.
