Philippe Clement sack latest: Keith Wyness drops emphatic Rangers verdict

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Rangers will have no choice but to part with Philippe Clement if they are “thrashed” by Celtic in the League Cup final next month.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Belgian “will not be looking forward” to the Hampden Park showdown.

Rangers face Celtic in Glasgow on 15 December with Clement aiming to retain the trophy against a side he is yet to beat in five meetings.

The Hoops have already demolished early-season title rivals Aberdeen 6-0 in the semi-finals of the competition.

Clement, who only signed a new four-year contract at Ibrox in the summer, has been under pressure following his sides’ poor start to the season.

Wyness suggested he needs a “miracle” to come out of next month’s meeting with the League Cup trophy.

Rangers boss Clement will go if he oversees Celtic thrashing, says Wyness

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “If the final turns out to be a five or a six nil to Celtic, as it was in the semi-final against Aberdeen, Clement will have to go.

“He will not be looking forward to this game at all – and there’s every chance it could end up like that.

“However, if he pulls off a miracle, then he stays.

“I think a big thrashing could be enough to put him over the edge.

“He won’t be looking forward to this game, it’s a game where his players are really going to have to play for him.

“Rangers can get something out of it, these games can be very tight. But if Celtic run away with it then it will be goodbye to Clement.”
