Philippe Clement under 'Massive Pressure' at Rangers amid sack verdict - Kris Boyd

Philippe Clement will be under “massive pressure” at Rangers this season to deliver results on the pitch, according to Kris Boyd.

Clement took over at Ibrox in October 2023 to replace Michael Beale and claimed the Scottish League Cup, but crumbled in the SPFL after initially closing a huge gap and then lost the title and Scottish Cup final to fierce rivals Celtic.

The Belgian is now looking to put his own stamp on the squad this summer with four deals already confirmed and moves for Liam Kelly and Hamza Igamane imminent, but Boyd told Sky Sports (27 June) that he is under pressure to deliver on the pitch.

“Philippe Clement on the pitch has done reasonably well,” he said. “He’s going to be under massive pressure this year to deliver for Rangers, and it’s the last thing he needs is another headache.”

Philippe Clement must be different to previous Rangers managers

Since Steven Gerrard left Ibrox the managerial appointments have been less than impressive, but Clement must change that.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst started well but couldn’t overcome Celtic despite his Europa League run and was rightly sacked, before the club made an emotional decision to move for Michael Beale which backfired too.

Clement has proven himself to be better than both of them so far, but his problems with beating Celtic exist too and now he needs to find a way to beat them or face falling into the same category as those two that came before him.

Without having Ibrox available to him for the first month of the season his job has no doubt become more difficult, but he would say himself that it isn’t an excuse not to win football matches.

A slow start will see him come under increasing pressure from fans and the media, so it’s imperative he starts well and starts with wins. With Celtic in the fourth game of the SPFL season, he has an early chance to put those doubts to bed also and he must take it.

In other Rangers news, club to hold talks with SPFL as a “matter of urgency” amid Ibrox chaos.
