Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes has admitted that Robby McCrorie made a “huge sacrifice” to leave Rangers this week.

The keeper has sealed his move to the Scottish Premiership side in search of regular first-team football and has taken a financial hit on his salary for it.

Philippe Clement had hoped to tie McCrorie down to a new long-term contract at Ibrox, but that wasn’t to be in the end [Scottish Sun].

“I think we’ve done really well to pull this transfer off,” said McInnes to Sky Sports.

“We’ve got to thank Rangers for their co-operation. Robby himself has made a huge sacrifice in terms of financials to make this happen which says a lot about him, to be honest.

“I think we’ve done really well to pull this transfer off and I am really looking forward to working with him.”

Why was Robby McRorie allowed to leave Rangers this summer?

Despite Jack Butland only joining Rangers at the start of the 2023/24 season, he has quickly become a fan favourite within the squad.

His performances across the campaign were solid and it was evident that he had a point to prove after a few seasons of infrequent appearances.

In fact, his performances were so strong that he was even being linked with a move away from Ibrox [Scottish Mail on Sunday, 19 May] at the start of the summer window.

Robby McCrorie was unable to usurp Jack Butland as Rangers’ number one last season

Although those rumours never came to fruition, it shows how much of an impact the former Stoke City man has made during his short time in Scotland.

Alongside the performances of Butland, the fact that Clement has brought Liam Kelly in over the summer outlined that McCrorie was very unlikely to improve on his single start last term.

With these factors in mind, a move made the most sense for both parties and it could even allow McCrorie to showcase his ability and make the Gers rue letting him depart.
