'Players listen to him': Tottenham star was added to club's leadership group this summer - journalist
'Players listen to him when he talks'
Tottenham Hotspur continue to remain a work in progress under Ange Postecoglou, but there have been plenty of signs that brighter times lie ahead for his side.
It has already been a turbulent start to the campaign for Tottenham, with back to back defeats coming in the Premier League either side of the international break. Of course, the fact that one of those losses came in the North London derby added to the disappointment.
It did appear that Tottenham may be in danger of being knocked out of the Carabao Cup in midweek, before a late turnaround spared Ange Postecoglou‘s side’s blushes. And they produced another comeback on Saturday, with Spurs beating Brentford 3-1, thanks to goals from Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson and James Maddison.
There has been plenty of changes at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the past 15 months since Postecoglou was appointed, with many of the squad he inherited moving on. Postecoglou made a statement by making Heung-min Son captain, while Maddison and Cristian Romero were made co-vice-captains.
Tottenham star added to club’s leadership group over the summer
And it seems that another member of the squad has been promoted to a senior role. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold suggested that the respect for Guglielmo Vicario within the dressing room has been recognised.
“I understand that over the summer, Vicario was added to the team’s leadership group. You might remember Spurs always had this leadership group in the past which all of the players since have left. It was Kane, Hojbjerg, Lloris of course, someone else I’m completely forgetting, even Skippy was in it as a young captain in the making, learning from the others. I don’t think Ben Davies was in it, pretty sure he wasn’t. Eric Dier was one of them,” he said.
“So obviously, all of those players have moved on now, and you’ve got Son, Maddison and Romero. And from what I understand, officially Vicario was added to that in the summer to make up a fourth member, because he is seen as a leader and he speaks very clearly and the players listen to him when he talks. He is a big voice in that dressing room, and he’s someone who’s been through a struggle, a battle in his career, and I think Postecoglou loves those kinds of players.”
An inspired signing on and off the pitch
Vicario has proved to have been an inspired signing following his move from Empoli in 2023. It is surely fair to say that few Premier League fans knew much about the Italian before his arrival.
However, Vicario was arguably one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League last season. He also appears to be ideal for the way Postecoglou wants his side to play, with how comfortable he is in possession.
Vicario has come in for criticism in the early stages of this season, but Tottenham look to be a much better side with the 27-year-old between the sticks. And it seems that the club feel that Vicario is also such an important figure to have around Hotspur Way.
