Ange Postecoglou reveals why Mikey Moore wasn’t subbed off in Tottenham win over Ferencvaros
Ange Postecoglou believes Mikey Moore deserved to stay on the pitch for 90-plus minutes as Tottenham beat Ferencvaros 2-1 in the Europa League.
Spurs took on the Hungarian champions at the Groupama Arena and scored either side of half-time, with Pape Matar Sarr and Brennan Johnson finding the back of the net, while Barnabas Vargas got on the scoresheet late to give the home fans something to cheer for.
Moore was handed his first start in the Europa League for Tottenham by Postecoglou on the night and speaking to football.london [3 October], the Australian was thrilled with what he saw from the 17-year-old.
“I thought he was outstanding. It’s brilliant for a 17-year-old to play 90 plus minutes in a European away tie. He just handled it superbly, I kind of knew he would and I think it’ll help his growth as a footballer once you get through a sort of experience like that. I think he’ll grow and evolve and I didn’t feel like I needed to take him off. He still looked strong at the end and was still contributing.”
Postecoglou added, “He kept his feet well and he takes the responsibility of driving inside or taking his man on. He makes good decisions with the ball. He’s got so much growth still, but the good thing is he wants to learn, he wants to develop and I couldn’t be happier for him but also pretty pleased that he’s part of our football club.”
Mikey Moore could be instrumental for Tottenham
Moore has made his way through the youth ranks at Tottenham and became the youngest player to feature for Spurs in the Premier League last season in the 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.
As per Sofascore, against Ferencvaros, the 17-year-old created one big chance and was aggressive in his display, attempting 14 ground duels and winning six.
Moore was efficient in linking up play for Tottenham in the opposition half and wasn’t shy of taking on defenders, which is an excellent attribute for a winger.
With the Englishman’s display against a tricky side like Ferencvaros, he has shown that Postecoglou can count on him to be an integral part of the squad going forward.
Tottenham have found their groove in recent weeks after a tough start to the season as questions were raised about the Australian manager’s future at the club.
Postecoglou has hinted at delivering a trophy at Spurs this season and Moore could well play a vital role in giving players like Son Heung-min, Johnson, Timo Werner and Dejan Kulusevski some support with the games coming thick and fast.
In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou will be concerned about one key player at the club after recent news.
