Pundit backs Aberdeen to make decision that will impact both Rangers and Celtic

Aberdeen will be the next club to cap away tickets for Rangers and Celtic after new developments at St Johnstone, according to John Hartson.

Craig Levein’s side confirmed on Tuesday (10 September) that fans of both Old Firm sides’ supporters will be limited to just Ormond and North stands and one section of the Geoff Brown Stand this season.

St Johnstone have followed the example of St Mirren in setting this precedent and Go Radio pundit Hartson believes that both Aberdeen and Hearts will follow their example sooner rather than later.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (10 September, 34:45) he said: “From our point of view, I haven’t got a clue why they’ve [St Johnstone] done it.

“Well Aberdeen will do it next, then Hibs will do it, then Hearts will do it and every club will start doing it now.”

How many tickets will Rangers get v St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park?

While Hartson has admitted that he isn’t the most clued up when it comes to these off-the-field matters, it does feel as though more and more clubs are going to treat travelling Old Firm supporters in this manner.

From a business sense, it does seem like a peculiar decision as it will limit the revenue made by these clubs when Celtic and Rangers are in town as both clubs’ supporters tend to travel in their thousands each and every week.

Similarly, from a footballing standpoint, it won’t do the Scottish game if stadiums are half-empty routinely because only so many away tickets can be sold, but for the home clubs themselves there are some positives.

Teams don’t want their stadiums to be turned into defacto home grounds for both Philippe Clement and Brendan Rodgers’ side and that is understandable. They don’t want to give the Old Firm any more of an advantage than they already have.

This debate is always going to split supporters and that is because there is no obvious right answer on offer. It will be interesting to see what other teams do between now and the end of the season.
