Tottenham will look to pursue a cut-price deal for Lille striker Jonathan David ahead of transfer deadline day, according to Alan Hutton.
Ange Postecoglou’s side are reportedly interested in signing the Canadian international who is thought to be available for just £25.7million this summer as he enters the final 11 months of his contract with Lille [TEAMtalk, 12 August].
The Lilywhites have already moved to bolster their frontline ahead of the deadline with the signing of Bournemouth forward Dominic Solanke for a fee reportedly in the region of £65million [BBC Sport, 10 August].
Although Hutton wasn’t impressed by David’s displays in the Europa Conference League against Aston Villa, he thinks the striker could provide a backup to Solanke and even play alongside the Englishman.
“Possibly both,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.
“I saw him play a couple of times against Aston Villa and there was a lot of hype around him.
“I think the game at Villa Park, I don’t know if it was the atmosphere or the hype around the game but he didn’t quite hit the heights that he’d shown in his league campaign.
“But there’s definitely ability there, he’s got pace, he loves running in behind, he’s physically well built so he could deal with the Premier League.
“I think it’s something that if they could get a cut price, then they might look at it and he looks quite versatile, which Ange might like as well.
“It will be interesting, I think there’s definitely potential there for him.”
Will Jonathan David exit Lille amid Tottenham transfer rumours?
The signing of Solanke has gone a long way to solving the striker issue that has affected Spurs following Harry Kane’s departure, but the clash with Leicester City showed further additions may well be needed.
David has carried a goal threat throughout his career and has got his campaign up and running with a goal against Reims and two in Champions League qualifying against Slavia Prague and Fenerbache.
If he could replicate that form in the Premier League he could provide the perfect foil to Solanke, while also giving Postecoglou some genuine cover at the top end of the pitch.
Whether or not the Lilywhites will stretch to the £25.7million asking price having spent so heavily on the Bournemouth forward already this summer could prove to be a sticking point in talks however.
