Gordan Dalziel has been left baffled by St Johnstone’s decision to limit the tickets made available to Rangers and Celtic fans at McDiarmid Park.
Craig Levein’s side confirmed in a letter to supporters on Tuesday (10 September) that fans of both Old Firm sides supporters will be limited to just Ormond and North stands and one section of the Geoff Brown Stand.
Gers fans were previously given tickets allocated in the East Stand and Clyde 1 pundit Dalziel believed St Johnstone have shown a lack of financial “common sense” by limiting the number of seats on offer to travelling fans.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (10 September) he said: “You’ve got to look at each club individually.
“I don’t think St Johnstone is one of the close clubs that can turn round and go do you know what, we’re not going to welcome the Celtic and Rangers fans here and we’re going to go on our own back.
“I don’t think that’s good common sense financially.”
How many tickets will Rangers get v St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park?
It is becoming more and more commonplace that teams around Scotland are capping the tickets available to travelling supporters, particularly from both the Old Firm teams.
While it is incredibly frustrating for Gers fans who want to follow their team all over the country, it does make sense from a footballing standpoint as teams like St Johnstone won’t want to feel like the away side in their own ground.
Financially, however, this could come back to bite Levein’s side as Dalziel has suggested, especially if they are not able to sell the bigger home allocation which will now be on offer against both the Gers and the Hoops.
For the Scottish game as a whole as well, it will not be a good look if McDiarmid Park is only half full when Philippe Clement’s side comes to town in November. For football north of the border to continue growing, big crowds are needed inside grounds.
This debate is one that will not only split Gers supporters but fans and pundits all over Scotland as there is no real right answer.
