Rangers fans are “desperate” for a “hero” and Nedim Bajrami might be that man after impressing during the international break, says Tam McManus.

The ex-Hibernian forward reacted on PLZ Soccer (9 September) after the Albanian’s international manager Sylvinho branded the Deadline Day signing “outstanding” [Daily Record, 9 September], suggesting Philippe Clement certainly needs a positive return on the late investment.

Alan Rough was less impressed by the effusive praise on international duty, claiming virtually every new signing arrives with something similar, but McManus was amazed by how quick to dismiss the ex-Scotland keeper had been.

He said (49m 10s): “Rangers fans, don’t even watch him! Give him a bit of hope, he might be a decent player.”

After Rough clarified he didn’t specifically mean Bajrami, McManus added: “They’re desperate for somebody to come in and lift the team. In the forward areas [Cyriel] Dessers is your main man. You need somebody to go and supply him, it could be Bajrami.

“He’s obviously played well, a big outlay on him, they’ve spent money towards the tail end of the window, they’ve paid money for him to come in and Rangers fans are hoping, they’re needing a hero, they’re needing somebody to come in and take the pressure off of Dessers in terms of scoring and creating goals.”

Rangers ace set for debut at Dundee United

What Rough says is true to a certain extent and high praise ahead of his debut will mean nothing if Bajrami struggles to adapt quickly in Glasgow.

Light Blues fans might be especially wary of getting their hopes up when they have seen the club offload promised savours from the Michael Beale era over the summer, with Sam Lammers and Jose Cifuentes both moving on to their second clubs since the former manager signed them a year ago.

But Bajrami was seen as a priority signing on the final day of the window [Daily Record, 29 August] and it is still a positive sign for the 25-year-old to be arriving in good form.

He wasn’t ready for the 3-0 loss at Celtic but should be in line to make his Gers debut at Dundee United, in a game that could see the visitors eight points off their Old Firm rivals by kick off in an “incredible” situation [Kris Boyd, 9 September].

Jim Goodwin’s side are currently above Clement’s in the Scottish Premiership table so a result can’t be taken for granted at Tannadice, but a positive start for Bajrami would be a definite positive.

The transfer window as a whole proved a disappointment and the jury is still out on other key signings such as Robin Propper, but with attacking options succumbing to injury all round it would help arrest the slump if the new man could have an impact straight away.
