Paul Robinson was impressed with Emerson Royal’s Tottenham performances towards the end of last season but still expects him to be sold this summer.
Spurs have already rejected an £8.4million bid from AC Milan for the Brazilian right-back according to BBC Sport [16 July], with interest also emerging from Saudi Arabia and Borussia Dortmund.
It is understood that Spurs’ asking price is double what was initially offered by the Serie A side, having signed the player from Barcelona for £25.8million in 2021 [BBC Sport].
Former Spurs goalkeeper Robinson thinks Emerson deserves credit for his performances at the end of 2023/24 but does think he won’t want to be a mere squad player again.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “He’s a player who has split opinion. At times, he has played poorly, but I was also quite impressed with how he changed his attitude around last season.
“During the January transfer window, he was heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, and I’m sure most of the Spurs fans would have driven him there themselves.
“His performance level was culpable for some goals but the way he knuckled down towards the end of the season, especially with Ange Postecoglou’s guidance, he changed his playing style and fit in well.
“He played quite well when he was asked to play centre-half and will be a player who the manager will utilise as part of the squad, though I don’t see him starting many games.
“Emerson won’t be guaranteed to play. He’ll be second or third choice at either full-back or centre-back and, at this point in his career, I can’t see him wanting to do that.”
Tottenham to cut ties with Emerson Royal?
The 25-year-old has made 101 appearances since arriving from Barcelona in 2021, though he was only able to make 11 Premier League starts last term due to Pedro Porro’s form.
He was trusted in a new position during the 2023/24 campaign, with both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven unavailable at one point in the season, seeing him start at centre-back.
However, with Spurs’ backline now fully intact, Emerson is unlikely to be awarded any significant game time, and Robinson believes this is what will seal his exit this summer.
In other Tottenham news, Daniel Levy has made a smart transfer call after talks with Ange Postecoglou.
