Michael Ball has questioned whether referee Craig Pawson has an “agenda” against Everton following a controversial decision against Newcastle United.

The Premier League official was at the centre of attention during the Toffees’ goalless draw at Goodison Park on Saturday 5 October, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin having a penalty claim waved away.

With the striker’s claims against Dan Burn also denied by VAR, the former Toffees left-back has pointed fingers at Pawson, suggesting he has some sort of vendetta against the club.

Writing via the Liverpool Echo on Tuesday (8 October), Ball said: “Time and time again, Craig Pawson has made seven or eight huge decisions that have gone against Everton Football Club.

“Why he is still allowed to referee Everton matches, I do not know, and I thought he had a totally poor game. There have been big decisions go against us for numerous years and also times when he’s been part of VAR.

“Even Neil Warnock has famously come out and asked what’s up with Craig Pawson, questioning whether he’s got an agenda against Everton.”

Are Everton mistreated by Premier League officials?

Fans at Goodison Park will certainly say they feel decisions often go against their players, but many fans from other clubs will also say the same thing.

While the Premier League are unlikely to have anything against the Toffees, however much it may feel they do, it does beg the question why Calvert-Lewin was not awarded a penalty against the Magpies.

He was clearly impeded by Burn, who threw his leg in the way in a desperate attempt to keep the striker out, bringing him down in the penalty area in the process.

Despite VAR being in full effect, the technology still comes hand-in-hand with human error due to the officials at Stockley Park using it and feeding their opinions into the referee’s ear.

Those at Goodison Park for the clash can hardly argue against the penalty James Tarkowski gave away, pulling Sandro Tonali to the floor, but fans just want consistency.

In other Everton news, Mike Keegan says the Toffees could end up on the wrong side of PSR again after £400m+ reveal.
