Pundit moots potential Tottenham swap deal with Leeds to sign 'Outstanding' gem

Alan Hutton has mooted the possibility of Tottenham offering Joe Rodon as part of a player-plus-cash swap deal to sign Leeds United gem Archie Gray.

Rodon spent the season on loan with Daniel Farke’s side in the Championship, impressing at the heart of the defence. But the Welshman was not able to help the Whites win promotion as they lost the playoff final against Southampton.

Leeds remain interested in securing the defender’s signature permanently this summer, but the financial implications of missing out on promotion to the top flight could potentially stop the Whites from getting their man.

Farke’s side could well need to cash in on teenage sensation Gray this summer to balance the books and Hutton has admitted Ange Postecoglou could offer Rodon and a huge fee to try and win the race for the 18-year-old.

“It would have to be big cash as well, not just Rodon,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“I think he’s had an outstanding season. He’s a guy who has played fullback, in midfield, at number 10, the list goes on and I think he is only going to get better.

“He plays with such freedom which is so refreshing to see and if you look at the way that Ange plays it is exactly suited to him. He’s comfortable coming into the pitch, taking the ball with his back to the goal, getting forward and with a good ability to cross into the box.

“He’s so young as well, I think he’s only going to get better. It’s going to be a big fee, but looking to the future, if they can bring someone like that in, he could be there for years to come.

“Or, they could even sell him on if he gets to that level where he is ready to move on, so I think it would be an outstanding signing.”

Could Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou sign Leeds United gem Archie Gray in the summer transfer window?

Spurs and Postecoglou are keen to evolve their side this summer having missed out on a place in the Champions League places last season, but that doesn’t mean they will be throwing money around recklessly.

It is clear that Rodon doesn’t have a future in North London as a regular starter therefore it would be best for both the Lilywhites and the Welshman if he was allowed to leave, but Spurs can still use him to their advantage.

Selling Rodon to Farke could be viewed as a favour and therefore help Tottenham’s hopes of bringing Gray to North London. It will still almost certainly mean spending an enormous fee, but the teenager could be a staple of Postecoglou’s side for years to come.

Whether or not this deal has legs remains to be seen, but it is certainly something Spurs should explore this summer.
