Dan Friedkin must understand the situation once taking the reins at Everton after making several “wrong choices” at Roma, Michael Ball has said.
Writing in the Liverpool Echo (12 November), the former Toffees player said that while fans are looking forward to Friedkin’s arrival, the American must take a more cautious approach than he has at Roma.
Friedkin has already sacked two managers at Stadio Olimpico this season after Ivan Juric followed Daniele De Rossi out the door last week, and Ball said this could be ominous for Sean Dyche’s future.
He said: “The big question right now over the Friedkin Group is whether they’ll understand the situation over what’s gone on at Everton.
“It’s a bit concerning that they’re making the wrong choices, because if they’d made the right ones then (Jose) Mourinho, Daniele De Rossi or Ivan Juric would still be in a job.”
Question marks remain over Dan Friedkin at Everton
While Friedkin’s arrival on Merseyside is expected to be a game-changer, the speed at which that change takes place must have a beneficial, rather than detrimental, effect on the club’s current fortunes.
Friedkin’s takeover is in line to be completed and ratified before the January transfer window opens, giving the Toffees a chance to spend on much-needed reinforcements for Dyche’s squad [TEAMtalk, 9 October].
However, it will not be possible to completely overhaul the side within a single month, and as such Friedkin would likely be best-placed keeping Dyche in post until the end of the season.
The existing squad at Goodison is – despite having been hamstrung by the club’s financial woes – very much built in Dyche’s image, and a mid-season change in management may not have the desired effect.
With Dyche out of contract in 2025 and the likes of Jose Mourinho linked with replacing him [The Boot Room, 12 October], it may be wiser for Friedkin to abandon his trigger-happy approach at Roma once he arrives on Merseyside.
In other Everton news, Toffees fans won’t be happy with what Jordan Pickford said after their 0-0 draw with West Ham United.
