Rangers could be set to secure a huge coup with the free transfer signing of Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.
The 28-year-old is out of contract at Turf Moor in the summer and has been a crucial asset in the Clarets promotion charge this season.
The Gers are amongst multiple clubs battling to sign the player according to TBR Football with West Ham, Fulham, Brighton, several Italian clubs and arch-rivals Celtic reported to rival teams from Turkey and Saudi Arabia for the midfielder’s services.
Former England striker Carlton Palmer told Football League World that Burnley should not sell their star man in the middle of a promotion push that could generate a huge windfall, saying: “Burnley have two choices, they can let the contract run down and get promotion and worry about it later, or cash in in the January transfer window, with the likes of Rangers, West Ham, Celtic, even Leeds United [interested],”
“But you certainly wouldn’t want to be selling him to anybody who is going to be competition to you in terms of getting promotion from the division.
“At the end of the day, this is the last chance you’re going to get any money for him, what is he worth? I don’t know, at 28 years of age, I don’t know how much money they could actually generate for him, with his contract out at the end of the season.
“Maybe £1.5 to 2 million, and maybe Burnley might think ‘you know what, we’ll keep him until the end of the season, if we get promoted we might end up with nearly £200 million’”.
Rangers cannot compete with financial muscle for Josh Brownhill
Regardless of whether Burnley sell the midfielder or chooses to risk losing him on a free transfer, it is clear that the Gers do not have the financial muscle to outbid some of the interested teams.
Other clubs will be able to offer the player higher wages than what the Ibrox club can afford.
Furthermore, the 28-year-old will likely want to play in a league with a higher reputation than the Scottish Premiership, for example, the Premier League, where he has played before.
Serie A with the likes of Lazio, Fiorentina and Torino interested in his services may be a tempting option too, with two of the three clubs chasing the midfielder challenging for the European places.
Philippe Clement’s side cannot match the potential riches that will be on the table if Burnley decides to keep Brownhill until the end of the season.
Therefore it is unlikely that Brownhill will be moving to Ibrox in the near future.
