Tony Cascarino has suggested it would be very difficult for the FA to appoint Everton manager Sean Dyche as the new England manager.
The search for Gareth Southgate’s successor continues after the Euro 2024 final defeat, with Lee Carsley all but pulling his name out of the running during the October international break.
While Dyche’s name was mentioned earlier in the season, Tony an Everton fan was quick to suggest the Blues boss deserved a chance to lead his national side given his work at Goodison Park.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday (14 October, 9:15) the fan said: “The name Sean Dyche hasn’t been mentioned, why’s he not considered?
“He’s never going to win anything at Everton with the players that we’ve got but surely he’s got a chance to win a World Cup?”
Cascarino replied: “I think it’s a tough one because the FA will always want to make it a popular appointment as well.
“Sean Dyche wouldn’t be a popular appointment because of the woes where Everton are and he hasn’t won anything. Lee Carsley has opened up and said the manager has to be proven at the highest level to be successful and that doesn’t tick the box I don’t think.
“It would make that appointment very difficult.”
Will Sean Dyche exit Everton amid Goodison Park developments?
While Toffees supporters will always be divided when it comes to their feelings around Dyche at Goodison Park, England fans would be split even further if he was named as Southgate’s successor.
Yes, the former Burnley boss is vastly experienced and has spent plenty of time managing in the Premier League, but he has never taken charge of a team competing at the top of the division in his career.
Maybe if he were given that opportunity, he would show that he had the ability and skills to flourish in that environment. However, it seems unlikely that the FA will be the ones to finally give the Everton boss that opportunity.
Whether or not that means his future lies on Merseyside remains to be seen. Dyche’s current deal expires at the end of the season and with a takeover looming at Goodison it isn’t yet clear if the new owners want to extend his stay.
He may not be the Blues boss for much longer, but that doesn’t mean that he will walk into the England job.
