Chris Sutton has told England not to move on from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after the October international break.
The Toffees stopper was left out of the starting XI for the Three Lions Nations League win over Finland on Sunday (13 October) with Crystal Palace ace Dean Henderson preferred between the posts.
Although Pickford was nowhere near his best during England’s loss to Greece earlier in the international break, BBC Sport pundit Sutton believes it would be a mistake to strip the Toffees star of his starting role.
Speaking on It’s All Kicking Off (14 October, 32:35) he said: “I don’t think so. I think that over the course and distance, he hasn’t let England down.
“I do think he’s slightly emotional at times, but I think if you look at his performances since he’s been England keeper, I wasn’t convinced about him at the start, but I don’t think he’s let England down.
“Henderson by all accounts was just getting his 90 minutes in so I don’t see him competing with Pickford.”
What has happened to Everton and England star Jordan Pickford?
Pickford has always been an interesting figure both on the international and domestic stage. Some fans love the Englishman while others worry about his emotional intelligence and his occasionally poor decision-making.
But whether it be in an Everton or England shirt, the former Sunderland man stands up and performs whenever his side needs him the most. His displays helped the Blues dodge the drop last term and drove England towards two major tournament finals.
He deserves more credit from fans and pundits alike and it is nice to see the likes of Sutton coming to his defence after a difficult evening. Hopefully, he returns from the international break ready to stake his claim for his starting place in Lee Carsley’s squad.
Sean Dyche and the rest of the Everton first team need him to be at his best this season.
While they have the players to put a gap between themselves and the relegation zone, they’ll need their keeper at his best to marshall what has been a leaky defence.
