Dominic Calvert-Lewin must take responsibility for the number of chances he has missed for Everton this season, Michael Ball has said.
The England international has had a tough start to the 2024-25 season, scoring just twice in 11 Premier League starts.
Ball reckons Sean Dyche has been let down by the likes of Calvert-Lewin in front of goal and stressed the need for the striker to be held accountable.
“In fairness to Dyche, his team has missed some big chances at important moments this season,” Ball wrote in his Liverpool Echo column [19 November].
“Dominic Calvert-Lewin has played well in parts, he is working hard and he does not have the best service.
“But he has still missed some good chances and he, like others, needs to take accountability for what they do on the pitch.”
Dominic Calvert-Lewin issue raised at Everton
Calvert-Lewin is significantly under-performing his xG of 3.72 and has missed seven big chances, according to FotMob.
Only Ollie Watkins and Erling Haaland have missed more big chances than him in the Premier League, but they have scored five and 12 goals respectively. The 27-year-old’s shot conversion rate of 7.7 per cent is also a huge concern.
Ball is, thus, right in saying that the former Sheffield United man must take accountability for not meeting the standards required.
Considering Calvert-Lewin’s struggles in front of goal, Dyche will hope to have Armando Broja back in action as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, there is uncertainty around Calvert-Lewin’s future at Goodison Park as his contract expires at the end of the season.
It would not be a surprise if the centre-forward left the club at the end of the season particularly after it recently emerged that senior Everton players could walk away if Dyche remains as their manager [The Esk].
In other Everton news, the Toffees are backed to snap up Orel Mangala for £12million amid the controversy at Lyon.
